The First Timer's not so helpful guide to D23

Alright, alright, alright and welcome to my new blog!  Just as a quick background about me, I used to blog on the regular with my best friend who is a fellow mom, just as Disney obsessed as me, and the most wonderful person in the world!  When I moved away we started a joint blog, Diapers and Divas, to share our life, our home, and our trials and tribulations with motherhood.  It actually did fairly well....but then life hit the fan and it all went to crap.

I've wanted to start blogging again for awhile, but honestly...I was scared.  Blogging is hard.  You're putting all your little emotions, feelings, tips and tricks, opinions, and LIFE out there for the world to see.  And I'm no expert...on ANYTHING...so who would want to listen to me, right?  Well I decided recently that...why should I care?  I'll share my experiences, failures and all, and if someone can take a little away from that...I'll call myself a success.

Which brings me to the point of my first post!  The overwhelmingly awesome D23 convention! Ever since I saw all the pics from 2017's D23 I knew I was going to go to the next one.  I bought 2 tickets as soon as I saw them go online, having no idea who I would take with me or what my plan was...all I knew is I was going.

Let me also say that no one I know is as much of a nerd as I am so I knew right off the bat that who-ever I brought would not appreciate the costumes, panels, booths, and picture taking as much as me.  Which brings me to tip number 1.

TIP #1:  GO WITH SOMEONE EQUALLY INTO THE DIS-DOM AS YOU OR GO ALONE.

By the time the even rolled around, I still didn't have anyone to go with.  SO...I asked my mom.  She's definitely not the type to initiate going to a convention like this, but she's always willing to have some fun so she agreed to go.  I felt a little held back because she really had no interest in anything, and even though she was telling me to go do what I wanted and she would follow, I wanted her to have a good time too.  Like when you're at the mall with someone who has totally different taste in clothes and they just hang by your side while you look and you feel obligated to leave or to cut time short to accommodate the other person. You all feel that, right?  I also had no idea what to expect so I thought that we would just wing it.  I knew that you could have reserved spots for panels and shops, but didn't really think twice about it.  Not to mention my badges came AFTER the reservation day and by the time I got my passes everything was already booked.  When we got to the convention and saw the overwhelming size of it....I knew I had made a grave error.  Tip #2 comin' attcha.

TIP #2: DON'T WING IT

When you buy your tickets for the convention, immediately start planning.  Sign up for updates from the website, know what panels you want to see, start looking at booths you'll want to visit, etc.  There is a lot to soak in and the better prepared you are, the more you will get out of the convention.  Make sure you are prepared to get online to reserve your experiences and study the schedule. There were things there I KNEW I wanted to see/do, like sign up for Disney plus and to see the Marvel displays.  I also knew I'd want to go shopping (merch, baby, merch!), but what I really would have loved to see was some of the panels, especially the Parks panel.  I had no idea when they would be, however, and I only bought a Saturday pass, and of course the Parks panel was on Sunday.  In hindsight....I would have definitely taken my advice for tip #3

TIP #3: BUY A THREE DAY PASS

Yup.  This is the one.  This is the biggest one.  Because even if you're overwhelmed, and even if you don't get a reservation for everything...this is the way to not miss out.  Just to be clear, this was my first convention of ANY KIND so I had ZERO idea what to expect.  And the one thing I was surprised about were the lines.  Lines for everything.  Lines for shows, lines for pictures, lines for shopping.  LINES FOR SHOPPING!  Just to get INTO the store!  I'm not complaining...I just didn't expect it.  And here's where tip #1 comes into play as well....my mom didn't care enough about anything to want to stand in a line.  We did just to experience some things, but she was worn down and bored after awhile.  Also, for someone like me who CLEARLY loves the merchandise (you probably gathered that since this is the 4th time in this post I've mentioned it) you can plan to go when the releases come out.  There were things that were sold out day one, and things that were released one days I wasn't there.  With proper planning and a three day pass, those things would hopefully not be a problem!

The overall experience of D23 was amazing.  I do wish that they would have communicated everything a little more clearly and made it easier to navigate for first timers.  I will definitely be going the next event, and with new knowledge in my back pocket, I know what to expect to have the best time ever!
